Ribbons, hoops, balls and clubs; colorful costumes and loud music - it’s hard not to love rhythmic gymnastics and the prospect of the best student-athletes in the world going all out for gold at the Messe Essen. Best described as expression through movement, the discipline combines elements of traditional dance and artistic gymnastics, using four accessories and with routines set to music chosen by the competitors. Few have rocked the rhythmic gymnastics arena like Anna Bessonova, the Ukrainian who won a total of 10 gold medals at four successive Universiades from 2003 to 2009. The sole women-only discipline in the FISU program, rhythmic gymnastics made its debut at the Sheffield 1991 Universiade.
