Whether using shakehand or penhold, the student-athletes on show inside Hall 1 of Messe Essen are sure to serve up a truly gripping table tennis competition. With winning smashes played in the blink of an eye and defending players often pushed five or more metres back from the table, the sport on the small table packs a mighty punch. Popularised in England and revolutionised in Asia, the early years of table tennis as a FISU World University Championships sport were dominated by Republic of Korea and Japan, until the entry of China in 1984. Their strong form continued into the sport’s debut at the FISU World University Games in 2001 through to the most recent edition in Chengdu, when Chinese players won all seven gold medals in front of rapturous home crowds. Can the tables be turned in Rhine-Ruhr?
